The BBC web site this week has posted a fascinating overview of the progress in medical research around growing new organs and body parts.

They speak to Dr Anthony Atala, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, who has made breakthroughs in building bladders and urethras.

They also check in with Prof Martin Birchall, a surgeon at University College London, has been involved in a number of windpipe transplant.

Also interviewed is Dr Doris Taylor, who is about to move to the Texas Heart Institute, who has produced beating rat hearts.
